EconSearch Completed Project

Project: Economic Impacts of Trends in Groundwater Levels and Groundwater Salinity on the Tatiara District (2006)

Client: Primary Industries and Resources South Australia, South East Natural Resource Management Board, Tatiara District Council

Collaborators: AWE and Social and Environmental Planning Partnerships

Summary: The results of the analysis demonstrate that the impacts will be moderate in the short-term but, if current trends continue, have the potential to be significant in the longer term (i.e. over 50 years) when gross regional product could fall by as much as 3 per cent and regional employment decline by around 1 per cent. Further, because salinity trends will vary significantly within management zones, the actual impacts on individuals will vary greatly, with the costs and impacts in some areas much greater than others.
