Project: The Economic Implications of the East Devonport Rail Link (2004)
Client: Port of Devonport Corporation, TasRail and Patrick Corporation
Summary: Any sea-freighted non-bulk cargo that arrived in the port of Devonport by rail or was rail-bound, was shuttled by road between East Devonport and existing rail facilities at the western shore port. A rail link across the Mersey River that would join the working ports either side of the river was proposed. A quantitative evaluation of the potential efficiency gains (freight cost reductions) associated with a proposed rail link and a quantitative evaluation, where possible, of the impact of the rail link on a range of other social, environmental and economic indicators were undertaken to assess the economic implications of the proposal.
