Summary: A review of policy mechanisms and frameworks for achieving strategic conservation outcomes on private and public land was identified as necessary to support the Environmental Policy team’s involvement in inter-agency and inter-government working groups and to enhance the advice provided to the Minister, Chief Executive and DEH Executive. Included in this report is a brief review of Australian experience with conservation policy instruments, a framework for selecting policy instruments to promote conservation is outlined and a range of policy suggestions/opportunities are canvassed for improving conservation outcomes.
