EconSearch Completed Project
Project: Economic Trends in South Australia's Commercial Fisheries: 1997/98 to 2007/08 (2009)
Client: PIRSA Fisheries
Summary: To meet PIRSA’s legislative requirements under the Fisheries Act 1982, EconSearch developed annual economic indicators to track the performance of the nine commercial fisheries in South Australia. For 11 years, 1997/98 to 2007/08, EconSearch has prepared economic and financial indicators for Northern and Southern Zone Rock Lobster, Abalone, Spencer Gulf and West Coast Prawns, Gulf St Vincent Prawns, Marine Scale, Blue Crab, Lakes and Coorong and Sardine fisheries. The indicators reported annually include those that have meaning for individual licence holders (average boat income, fixed costs, variable costs, gross operating surplus, profit at full equity and return on investment) and the indicators that are pertinent fishery wide (gross value of production (GVP), beach price, cost of management services, contribution to the state’s economy in terms of gross state product (GSP) and employment, and economic rent). The report provides a summary of the boat level and industry wide indicators that have been collected, calculated and estimated over an 11-year period.
