Project: Economic and Environmental Indicators for South Australia and its Regions: Conference Presentation (2009)

Client: Conference Presentation for the Pacific Regional Science Conference Organsiation, 21st July 2009

Summary: This paper reports on the database preparation in updating regional (12) and state input-output tables for SA. A set of regional tourism accounts have been prepared in a manner analogous to the tourism satellite accounts prepared by the ABS at a national level. The population component is less straightforward and is based on the Mangan-Phibbs (1989) approach to demographic-economic modelling. We believe this is the first systematic application of the method since the original Mangan and Phibbs’ study of the Wollongong region in New South Wales. The environmental accounts are in three parts: water, energy and greenhouse gas emissions. The work was undertaken in collaboration with the SA Government and it makes for an interesting story of data availability and what to do when there are gaps and deficiencies.
