EconSearch Completed Project
Project: Economic and Environmental Indicators for SA and its Regions (2009)
Client: Department of Trade and Economic Development
Collaborator: Barry Burgan, Economic Research Services
Summary: This project involved preparing a set of input-output (I-O) tables for South Australia and its regions, incorporating a complementary set of region by industry accounts detailing tourism expenditure, water consumption, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. A set of reports were prepared detailing the method, data sources and results for South Australia and its component 12 Government regions for 2006/07. These reports include:
- Economic and Environmental Indicators for SA and its Regions, 2006/07
- Input-Output Tables for SA and its Regions, 2006/07: Technical Report
- Shift-Share Analysis: SA Government Regions
- Shift-share Analysis: SA Regional Development Board Regions
Key data from the I-O models as well as some of the findings from an analysis of these data are presented in the first of the reports. These data include employment, value of output, gross state product, imports/exports by sector, and estimates of water consumption, net energy consumption and net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by sector by region.
A description of the process used to construct the I-O models is provided in the technical report. As well the data sources and method used to generate the extensions to the I-O models (including population and the unemployed, water consumption, net energy consumption and net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions) and I-O model specification (i.e. intermediate sector definitions, final demands primary inputs and regional definitions) are also provided.
The approach taken in the two shift-share analysis reports was to consider the structure of the regional economy in terms of industry employment at two points in time, analyse changes over that time period and attribute identified changes to a range of different components.
