Project: Economic Analyses for the Impact of Drought Conditions and Water Restrictions on River Murray Irrigation Industries and Regions (2004)

Client: PIRSA

Collaborators: Scholefield Robinson Horticultural Services and Steve Scown, Scown Consulting

Summary: As a consequence of serious drought conditions in the majority of the Murray Darling Basin during 2002 and 2003, the Murray Darling Basin Commission informed the relevant South Australian Government Departments in late May 2003 of the likelihood that the state would not receive their normal entitlement flow for the 2003/04 financial year. In response, this project quantified the impact of recent and possible future water restriction scenarios on individual growers and the subsequent flow-on effects to regional communities and economies in the River Murray region of South Australia.
