EconSearch Completed Project

Project: Economic Analyses for the Irrigation Efficiency Project in the South East Catchment Region (2005)

Client: South East Catchment Water Management Board

Collaborators: Scholefield Robinson Horticultural Services and Australian Water Environment

Summary: The first stage of the project included a cost benefit analysis of options for upgrading irrigation systems and management within the region. The second stage of the project involved an assessment of the long-term viability of irrigation in the region. Because of the range of monetary and non-monetary benefits associated with different options, multi-criteria analysis was the main technique for option assessment.
Included in the project was the development of a profile of irrigated activity in each of the Prescribed Wells Areas in the South East catchment region for 2003/04. The key indicators of irrigated activity by crop type included, area, water pumped, number of irrigators, irrigation method and gross value of production.
